CSTME Outreach Initiatives

Curiosity in science and mathematics starts early. We look to encourage these interests in young students through targeted activities. CSTME faculty and our college students routinely go out to NJ schools and spend the day with the children in hands-on science, math and computational enrichment workshops.

Building Bridges
A Partnership between CSTME & St. Joseph the Carpenter (Roselle NJ)
Begun in the fall 2006 semester, CSTME faculty and students travel monthly to the middle school classroom to work hands on with some 100 students in grades 5 thru 8. Most recently in April & May 2007, CSTME students lead the children in an activity to explore the physics of projectile motion while in March 2007, the sessions focused on understanding the human brain’s function of the sense of touch.

LEGO Robotics
In the summers 2005 thru 2007, CSTME faculty and students conducted a grant-funded LEGO robotics summer camp centering on physics, engineering and technology.

Brain Awareness Week
The Society for Neuroscience sponsors nationally a yearly Brain Awareness Week in which CSTME faculty and students participate. In Spring 2006, CSTME sophomores composed and taught lessons on neurobiology and healthy eating to students at a local urban elementary school. For full information on the event, visit the SFN 2006 BAW report online at http://www.sfn.org/baw/bawreport2006/displayReport.cfm?ID=116

Teacher Training Workshops
With funding and training from the American Physiological Society, CSTME faculty work alongside researchers from UMDNJ/RWJ Medical School to conduct full-day workshops for high school teachers on integrating physiology, science and math with technology in their classrooms.
